As of 2021, less than 5% of college students in the U.S. were involved in fraternity and sorority life. Yet, due to the connectedness and leadership ability of many Greek students, they are one of the most influential groups to reach on many college campuses. So how can we take steps to reach these leaders?&nbsp;
 5 Tips to Set Yourself Up For Dynamic Impact with Greek Students

As you attempt to reach Greek students, we have found it best to focus on individual fraternity and sorority chapters as opposed to trying to reach &ldquo;Greek students&rdquo; at large. For example, students in Greek life, especially fraternity men, can be territorial and apprehensive about attending a Bible study or other small group with guys in other fraternities. We have seen the gospel spread like wildfire in an individual Greek chapter more quickly when we have channeled our efforts on individual chapters instead of recruiting to an &ldquo;all Greek&rdquo; Bible study. We have seen how recruiting students to a Bible study &ldquo;just for your pledge class/new member class&rdquo; has been an accelerant for walls coming down and building up trust.

Tip #2 Come Through the Front Door

When first working with an individual fraternity or sorority, make sure to be clear and direct about your intentions. With many universities having a more watchful eye on Greek life, chapter leaders are more skeptical than ever about someone who is not in college being around their chapter and interacting with their members. It will go a long way to come through the front door and share who you are and what your purpose is with the chapter. A good starting point is to meet with the key leaders (the president or entire exec. team and pledge trainer/new member educator are the best places to start). This will be a great first step in establishing who you are on the way to building trust. Few things erode trust quicker in a Greek chapter than when people in key leadership positions find out that someone outside their chapter has been trying to meet with their members or pledges, or host events without them knowing about it.&nbsp;

Whether it&rsquo;s meeting with chapter leadership or how you introduce yourself to members of the chapter, be upfront with who you are and what you&rsquo;re about. Whenever someone who is not in the fraternity or sorority is around the chapter, every member asks, &ldquo;Who is that?&rdquo; whether they end up asking you or not. By flying your flag early, you&rsquo;ll be able to remove any tensions about who you are and what you do.
A line we have used is &ldquo;I work for an organization on campus that helps people develop their faith in college.&rdquo; Or: &ldquo;I work for _______, we help people grow in faith, character, and leadership.&rdquo; Find a description that is both easy for people in the chapter to understand and clear that there is a faith/spiritual component to what you do. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m here because I love college students&rdquo; or &ldquo;I help mentor people in college&rdquo; is partially true, but doesn&rsquo;t fly your flag and can lead to greater skepticism about your intentions. The best route is always the most direct route.

Tip #4 Determine How Can You Add Value?

Every good minister will have a strategy for their approach. As you consider reaching Greek students, no doubt you have one too. Initially, it might be to start a Bible study or host an event. While asking chapter leadership for permission to do one of these, I think a better question is, &ldquo;How can I add value here?&rdquo;
I love asking fraternity presidents this question when I meet with them. It allows them to dictate the access they give me and shows that I&rsquo;m someone wanting to serve their needs, not my own agenda.
Several years ago, I asked this question to a fraternity pledge trainer. He shared how their chapter was on probation from nationals and they needed mandatory leadership training seminar hours for their new pledge class. He asked if I would be willing to speak to do that for their entire pledge class. Over the next four weeks, I got to be in their house and in front of their pledges! It served the chapter, but also helped me get to know the guys in their fraternity. Win-Win! The ways in which a chapter sees you adding value to them is the best on-ramp to you getting connected.
The &ldquo;How can I add value?&rdquo; question also prevents you from being shut out from gaining access. For example, if you ask a chapter president for permission to lead a Bible study, you might hear, &ldquo;No thanks, we already have one of our members doing that.&rdquo; The adding value question opens the possibilities.&nbsp;

Having a dynamic impact in a particular fraternity or sorority rarely happens in one year. I&rsquo;ve seen a few cases where God has opened the floodgates, but usually it takes a few years or more to win trust, build deep relationships, and start seeing significant momentum toward the Lord. It&rsquo;s uncommon that God will use you to reach a chapter overnight, but what if you prayed for God to give you one lost, hungry leader whom you can lead to Christ and through whom can multiply?
Spiritual momentum in a chapter skyrockets when one of their members lives out radical life transformation before their eyes. In my experience, the most significant and catalytic impact in Greek ministry happens through spiritual multiplication. May God use us to see a mighty work happen through Greek students on our campuses!
