80% of the world’s evangelical Christians live in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Over the last 50 years, God’s church has grown exponentially in these areas.

These regions have tremendous mission sending potential to help bring the gospel to unreached peoples, but they currently send only 20% of the world’s cross-cultural missionaries!

Team Profile

You can probably relate to what King Jehosophat was experiencing. If this was a movie scene, our ears would be filled with a riveting Hans Zimmer score as this epic plot unfolds.&nbsp;
It was a lonely time of leadership since Jehosophat&rsquo;s northern Jewish counterpart King Ahab had tragically died in a battle they had fought together. Sensing a new weakness in the air, three different people groups united to attack Jehosophat&rsquo;s two smaller, Southern Jewish tribes.&nbsp;
The above verse from 2 Chronicles brings up a great question every leader must answer: what do you do as the leader when you don&rsquo;t know what to do next?&nbsp;

Two Kinds of Enemies

Many a campus worker has gotten stuck looking at the &ldquo;vast army&rdquo; coming against them as they lead.&nbsp;
I have noticed these &ldquo;enemies&rdquo; can emerge in external or internal forms.&nbsp;
Whether it be spiritual apathy amongst students, ministry funding challenges, university administration changes, or leadership team dysfunction, there is always enough happening externally outside of our control to cause us to not know what we should do next.&nbsp;
Sometimes the &ldquo;vast army&rdquo; comes from within due to feeling overwhelmed by the various responsibilities our &ldquo;job&rdquo; requires and not knowing what to do next. I have come to understand the title of campus or college minister is not just one job, but many jobs which expanded my skill set well beyond something I could describe on my LinkedIn profile.&nbsp;

Sometimes it feels hard to determine how to proceed because we have learned so many different skills, we don&rsquo;t know which one to use next. To borrow secular terms, I have learned how to be a marketer, life coach, preacher, event organizer, mentor, graphic designer, crisis counselor, social media manager, academic tutor, relationship expert, apologist, missions recruiter, intercessor, database manager, fundraiser, leadership guru, and even fashion designer (insert annual t-shirt design, anyone?).&nbsp;
I&rsquo;m overwhelmed typing all of this because none of this includes the daily responsibility of managing our personal lives or family!

The good news is no matter if we are facing an external or internal &ldquo;army,&rdquo; we do not have to make our next move in our own strength. Though life can be overwhelming, God is able to help us overcome it!&nbsp;
How so? The answer lies in the rest of the chapter for Jehoshaphat, which I believe is the same for each of us as kingdom workers sent to the college campus.

1. Say it to His Face (2 Chron. 20:3-12)

The questions of the people and Johoshaphat&rsquo;s own mind must have been many. Should they run? Should he protect his family and board up the Jerusalem palace and hide? Should they all fight? Can they win?&nbsp;
Despite the questions swirling and the impending doom of war, Jehoshaphat resolved to go to God with the honest truth: he did not have a clue what to do next about facing this army. He acknowledged his ignorance publically through prayer to God before his people.&nbsp;
Often when we go through difficult things, the last place we go is to God or the people we lead to admit our ignorance or limited knowledge. The truth is though, much of leadership with the Lord is on a &ldquo;need to know&rdquo; basis. Those whom God leads do not get the privilege of knowing everything they want to know, just what is revealed when we need to know it.&nbsp;
Prayer is a chance for us to be honest with what we don&rsquo;t know. God gives us impossible situations so that in prayer everyone&ndash;including us!-- knows we cannot succeed unless God shows up.&nbsp;

2. Listen for His Word (2 Chron. 13-19)

The place of prayer led Jehoshaphat and his people to a place of waiting and listening. What would God tell them to do?&nbsp;
The answer came from someone else empowered by God&rsquo;s Spirit. The word was, &ldquo;Do not be afraid or discouraged,&rdquo; and &ldquo;March down&hellip;take position&hellip;stand firm,&rdquo; and, &ldquo;You will not have to fight in this battle&rdquo;(v. 15-17). Going face to face with a vast army and not fighting them was something none of the people considered previously, I am sure!&nbsp;
When we pray, we should actually listen to what God has to say for us to do. Prayer is not just feeling better about ourselves by verbally getting some things off our chest to the Lord. Prayer is learning to be truthful while also learning to receive truth back. We should sit in expectation that he wants to speak to us to bring clarity about what we should do next.&nbsp;

3. Fight with Obedience (2 Chron. 20-23)

For Jehoshaphat, the answer for what to do next was not to march out with swords but to march out with songs. Much like Joshua marching around Jericho (Joshua 6), this unconventional military strategy would make them live by faith in a heavenly commander. When the people did this, they found a victory that day, unlike anything they had ever seen. God not only gave them instructions but also the results to back up what he had spoken to them.&nbsp;
Like Jehoshaphat, our leadership roles will lead us to helpless places so we can reach out for supernatural help. We have the ultimate cheat code: a God who loves us, protects us, and shows up even in dark times.

The next time you get stuck, remember Jesus was supernaturally strengthened after he spent the night in prayer (Luke 23:39-43). He gained strength to face the vast enemies we all have of sin, selfishness, and Satan by dying in darkness on a mountain called Calvary. He was then resurrected three days later&mdash;meaning he can walk us through&mdash;not just to&mdash;every dark valley (Psalm 23:1-6)
We may not know what to do as leaders, but we know the one who does know and desires to make his will known (John 8:12; Eph 1:7-10)!
